Established in 1948 | A pioneering institute of higher education in North Bengal
By miracle of Destiny, the Independence, formation of East Pakistan and hence partition of Bengal caused huge Hindu population displacement from the then east. The Hindus left the then East Pakistan and came to India, with Balurghat being a border town, the growth of population rose from five thousand to fifty thousand in the year of independence.
As a result, along with manifold economic problems, education figured most prominently. To solve the educational problem of the people, Balurghat College was started on 8th September 1948, as an intermediate liberal arts college, with 96 students in the tin-sheds of the Balurghat high school under the Kolkata University.
Today, Balurghat College is recognized as one of the oldest and largest colleges of Dakshin Dinajpur district, reckoned as a pioneering institute of higher education in North Bengal.
